Patch Me Up
The Brooklyn Nets are the latest team to cash in on the NBA jersey patch craze, signing a deal with WeBull for $30 million per year.
Other recent deals:
LA Lakers: 5-years worth $100+ million with Korean food giant Bibigo.
Philadelphia 76ers: $10 million annually with crypto.com.
Washington Wizards: seeking $12 million annually.
Before this run of sponsorships, the Golden State Warriors held the crown of largest annual jersey patch deal thanks to its $20 million annual deal with Rakuten.
Let’s put this in perspective: Starting in the 2017 season, the NBA allowed teams to sell jersey space to sponsors after watching the WNBA have success doing the same. The initial round of jersey patch deals averaged $9.3 million per year.
Since then, the average deal size has increased by 70% and become a significant revenue source for teams. Originally a three-year pilot, the program was extended indefinitely.
Zoom out: Now, jersey patch sponsorships are going for more than stadium naming rights.
WeBull: $30 million annually for Nets jersey patch.
Barclays: $10 million annually for Nets stadium naming rights.
Neither the Nets nor WeBull confirmed the length of the partnership, but most jersey rights deals last 3-5 years.
