Derby Days
Dubbed the most exciting two minutes in sports, the Kentucky Derby AKA “The Run for the Roses” AKA Lilly Pulitzer’s biggest event of the year kicked off the Triple Crown season this past weekend.
The numbers are staggering, especially considering capacity was limited to 33%.
  • 15 million average viewers, up from 9.8 million in 2020.
  • 51,838 live fans, the largest crowd in the U.S. since the pandemic began.
  • $233 million bet on the Kentucky Derby Day program, second only to 2019 and up 85% from 2020.
The Derby was NBC’s most-watched program of 2021 not named the NFL Playoffs. For reference, the 2021 Oscars only brought in 9 million viewers. Horses > celebs.
What's on the line? The Kentucky Derby opens the three-race Triple Crown series. With the Preakness (May 15th) and Belmont Stakes (June 5th) on the horizon, Derby winner Medina Spirit could become the third horse since 2015 to win the Triple Crown.
The bigger picture: Despite recent history, the Triple Crown is incredibly rare. Only 13 horses have won the Triple Crown since its founding in 1919.

  • The Warriors prevailed in the first-ever Marvel-themed game.
  • Steph Curry dropped 40 points, but Draymond Green won the most “Hero Points;” don’t worry, we’re confused too.

(33-14-5) Washington Capitals 6 vs. (26-21-6) New York Rangers 3
  • The Caps knocked the Rangers out of playoff contention and out on the ice during a full line scuffle that ended in a 14-minute penalty for misconduct.
Premier League
(26 pts) West Brom 1 vs. (42 pts) Wolves 1
  • West Brom fought back to claim the 1-1 draw, but without securing a win, moved closer to relegation and dropping out of the Premier League once the season ends.
(58 pts) West Ham 2 vs. (36 pts) Burnley 1
  • In a thrilling game with torrential rain and plenty of offensive chances for both teams, it was West Ham’s Michail Antonio who provided the magic scoring two goals off crosses into the penalty box.

Stat: The Brooklyn Nets are 27-7 with James Harden since trading for him, but only 9-9 without him.
Quote: “Whoever came up with that s—t needs to be fired.”
- LeBron James on the NBA playoff play-in tournament. Coincidentally, he said this after the Lakers fell from the 6th automatic seed to the 7th seed play-in spot.
