Smith narrowly beat out John Rahm (-33) and Matt Jones (-32) for the first win of the calendar year. Imagine going -33 and not winning a tournament.
🏒 The San Jose Sharks waived Evander Kane for breach of contract in the middle of his 7-year, $49 million deal.
Once one of the best wingers in the league, Kane has fallen from grace after a wild year where his wife accused him of betting on games he played in and he was caught providing a fake vaccine card to the league.
Game of the Year
Giphy / Derek Carr
With everything on the line, the Indianapolis Colts lost to the worst team in the league in front of a bunch of fans in clown suits. The loss opened the door for the most improbable playoff scenario ever...
If the LA Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders tied last night, then both teams would have gone to the playoffs and the Steelers would've been left at home. It came two seconds from happening.
(10-7) Las Vegas Raiders 35 vs. (9-8) LA Chargers 32 -- OT
Down 7, the Chargers converted on what felt like 100 4th downs on a drive that ended with Justin Herbert (383 yards, 3 TDs) hitting Mike Williams for a 12-yard TD with zero seconds left in regular time.
The teams then traded overtime field goals, setting up the possible tie as Steelers fans everywhere sweated bullets.
The Raiders looked ready to run out the clock, but Chargers coach Brandon Staley called a timeout... after, the Raiders converted a 3rd down and kicked a 47-yard field goal as overtime expired.
In his postgame interview, Raider quarterback Derek Carr was asked if the Chargers' timeout changed their mindset. He said: "It definitely did, obviously."
The playoff picture: Remember, only the top seeds get first-round byes this year as the NFL expanded to three Wild Card teams per conference. The 2-seeds play the 7-seeds, the 3s play the 6s, and the 4s play the 5s.
Kansas City Chiefs
Las Vegas Raiders
New England Patriots
Green Bay Packers
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
The favorites: Heading into the playoffs, the Green Bay Packers (+380) and Kansas City Chiefs (+450) are the two Super Bowl favorites.
Giphy / Klay Thompson
31 months after tearing his ACL in game 6 of the 2019 NBA Finals, Klay Thompson made his return to the Golden State Warriors.
His road back: Talk about a winding return...
June 2019: Thomson tears his ACL coming down awkwardly from a dunk attempt. After leaving the court, he returned to shoot free throws.
July 2019: Klay agrees to a five-year, $190 million extension with Golden State.
Nov. 2020: Thompson tears his Achilles during an offseason workout.
Nov. 2021: Klay participates in his first full-team practices since the injury.
941 days since the ACL, Klay’s back and the Warriors look even more dangerous.
(30-9) Golden State Warriors 96 vs. (22-18) Cleveland Cavaliers 84
Klay had 17 points in just 20 minutes, including this poster dunk to let the league know he’s fully healthy.
In his postgame interview, Klay said: “Gosh it was fun, and it was worth every single day… Not gonna say equivalent to winning a championship, but pretty freakin’ close.”
The Warriors have the best record in the NBA.
For the second time in five years, the CFP Natty features a rematch of the SEC Championship game in Georgia verse Alabama.
The case for Bama: Bryce Young won the Heisman after becoming the only quarterback to torch Georgia after he hung 41 on the Dawgs in the SEC Championship.
Plus, Bama's going for natty #5 in the last 10 years and its defense is firing on all cylinders after a slow start to the year.
The case for Georgia: The Bulldogs have the best defense in the country, and it’s not particularly close. Coming into the SEC Championship game, they:
Held all opponents to 17 or less points
Held nine opponents to 10 or less points
Allowed only .36 points drive, the lowest ever recorded
With more time to prepare and experience playing Bryce Young, the Dawgs defense should be better prepared for round 2.
Sprint’s take: Bama vs. Georgia will be the fifth time top-5 teams who met during the regular season meet twice. The previous four times, the loser of the first won the rematch…
Despite that, we’re going with Bama. Never bet against Nick Saban.
Stat:22.5. Pittsburgh Steelers TJ Watt tied Michael Strahan’s single-season sack record with 22.5 in the team’s win over Baltimore.
Quote:“I’ve never wanted a tie so bad.”
— Justin Herbert right before the Chargers overtime timeout.
Highlight:Two college hockey players took an inadvertent ice bath after breaking through the rink wall.
Highlight 2:Ja Morant caught the ball against the backboard in the early favorite for the NBA’s block of the year.
Meme: Warriors dynasty is back.
