WATER COOLER TALK
🏈 Seattle Seahawks WR DK Metcalf could qualify for the Olympics with his upcoming 100m dash at the Olympic trials. After watching him chase down Budda Baker, we think he’s got a chance.
πŸ’ The NHL fined Tom Wilson $5k for his role in a dirty on-ice fight. Meanwhile, the NFL fines players that much for wearing the wrong color socks.
πŸ€ Sacramento Kings’ star rookie Tyrese Haliburton will miss the rest of the season with a knee injury.
πŸ€ The Phoenix Suns’ gorilla mascot signed the first mascot endorsement deal with a Phoenix-based streetwear boutique. Now, the gorilla will rock Rolexes, rare sneakers, and baggy jeans with lots of holes in them to games.

SOCCER
Say What?
A live look in on Manchester United’s front office, where the Glazer family announced they intend to stay as owners. In fact, despite the recent fan protests, they plan to double Man U’s current valuation to $10 billion.

Fans are not happy. After breaking into the team’s stadium on Sunday and forcing the cancellation of the huge match against Liverpool, fans ratcheted up the intensity even more.

In an open letter, they went straight for the wallet, threatening team sponsors:
  • “Manchester United fans will boycott your products, seek to tarnish your brands, and support your competitors until you terminate your commercial partnership with the Glazer family.”
All this stems from Manchester United and 11 other teams creating the Super League. Fans saw the effort as an attempt to ‘American-ize’ European soccer. Basically, any of the big clubs could happily become the NY Jets of the Super League and still be guaranteed loads of money without the threat of relegation.

Are Americans really at fault? Like any good consultant, I’ll give you this answer - it depends who you ask. Of the 12 teams that tried to create the Super League, only four sported American ownership.
  1. Manchester United
  2. Liverpool
  3. Arsenal
  4. AC Milan
But, even dating back to 2011, the League Managers Association warned American and Asian owners were "already talking about bringing about the avoidance of promotion and relegation in the Premier League."

The bigger picture: The Glazers are probably right. As one of the most recognizable clubs in the world, Manchester United is well-positioned to benefit from the rise of sports betting, streaming, and the Premier League’s growing popularity in the U.S.
