WATER COOLER TALK
🏈 The NFL released controversial Covid restrictions for both vaccinated and unvaccinated players. The most hotly debated? If a game must be forfeited due to Covid, players on both teamswill not be paid.
Also, if a team must forfeit, the game is considered a loss for them instead of a cancellation.
🏈 The Superdome, the home of the New Orleans Saints, is getting a new name. Louisiana lawmakers approved the naming rights for Caesar's in a potential 20-year, $138M deal. If finalized, it'll be the NFL's first sports betting related stadium.
🏀 High school basketball star Mikey Williams signed a deal with Excel Sports. He’s expected to generate millions in endorsement money. As a side effect of the new NIL laws, expect to see more high school stars doing the same.
⛳️ Rickie Fowler, who’s had a rough season, shot a season-low 64 and leads the 3M Open after its first round. 50 starts removed from his last title, Rickie may be back on track.
After five years and major cancellation concerns, the Summer Olympics are officially back. The Opening Ceremony takes place this morning (starting at 7 AM ET on NBC).
When: Friday, July 23 - Sunday, August 8
Where: Tokyo, Japan
What: A mix of 30+ sports across 42 venues
How to watch: NBC, USA, NBCSN, Peacock
Unfortunately, a good chunk of the Games will be on Peacock… NBC’s streaming network it’s pushing during the Olympics. The good news? The main events are on the free tier.
These sports are new to the Games this year:
And, after an Olympic hiatus, baseball and softball are back.
US athletes to watch
Simone Biles: With five medals (four of them gold) already to her name, Biles just needs three more to tie Shannon Miller for most all-time by an American gymnast. Competing in five events, Biles has a chance to blow past that record.
Katie Ladecky: The 2016 most decorated female Olympian (five gold medals), Ladecky will compete in one more event this time around. She holds the World Record in three events - the 400, 800, and 1500 meter freestyle.
Kevin Durant: With Team USA coming off a 1-2 record in exhibition games, KD must be special to capture his third consecutive Olympic gold medal.
Carissa Moore: The #1 women's surfer in the world, she's expected to win gold in the sport's first-ever Games.
AROUND THE LEAGUES
Olympic Soccer (U23)
Mexico4vs. France 1
The gold medal favorites overmatched France. Several key French contributors, such as Kylian Mbappe and Eduardo Camavinga, weren’t given permission from their clubs to travel to Tokyo.
Brazil 4 vs. Germany 2
Brazil, the defending Olympic champions, came out of the gates with a purpose behind Everton striker Richarlison’s 30-minute hat trick (7’, 22’, 30’).
(59-38) Boston Red Sox 5vs. (50-45) NY Yankees 4 - 10 innings
Up 3-1 going into the 9th inning, the Yankees' wild pitching let the Red Sox tie the game. The Red Sox then put up another two runs in the 10th to win the game.
Quote:"Never thought I would say this, but being in a position to hurt my team because I don't want to partake in the vaccine is making me question my future in the NFL."
- Star receiver Deandre Hopkins, in a since-deleted tweet. He later said: “Btw I got about 9 more years in me.”
Highlight:Simone Biles landed a double pike… in training. Bet she does it during the Olympics, too.
