Pandemic Champs
Perhaps no other sport saw the growth disc golf did last year. The Professional Disc Golf Association gained 20,000 new registered members (a 15% rise from 2019) and hundreds of thousands of casual players tried the sport for the first time.
Disc golf is the ideal sport for a pandemic:
  • It gets people outside and lets them play socially distant or with a couple close friends
  • It only requires a few discs and usually costs nothing to play a round
With 3.5 new disc golf courses built every day in 2020, the sport is on a meteoric rise. Pretty soon, disc golf in America might look like these Masters-reminiscent tournaments in Finland.
A hybrid of tennis, badminton, and ping-pong, pickleball saw a 21.3% increase in total participation since March 2020. Why the rise?
  • It can be played anywhere: From a dedicated pickleball court to a driveway or even a rooftop, all that is needed is a 20’x44’ rectangle of free space. Add a couple of paddles, a wiffle ball, and you’re set.
  • It can be played by anyone: The sport is growing most with the 55+ community looking for outdoor activity and community.
Perhaps the only downside to this sport’s growth is an increase in noise complaints.
Zoom out: In general, solo sports dominated the pandemic as cities limited team sports.
  • Skateboarding (+34.2%)
  • Tennis (+22.4%)
  • Golf (+21.7%)

Bill Goin' Crazy
The way Bill Belichick and the Patriots are spending you’d think they just got their $1,400 stimulus checks.
A day ahead of free agency, during what’s known as ‘the legal tampering period,’ they’ve already agreed to terms with:
  • Cam Newton (re-signed) - QB
  • Jonnu Smith - TE
  • Nelson Agholar - WR
  • Kendrick Bourne - WR
  • Trent Brown (trade) - OL
  • Davon Godchaux - DT
  • Matthew Judon - LB
  • Jalen Mills - CB
That’s some serious talent, but Bill isn’t done yet.
The draft: Expect the Pats to take their QB of the future with the 15th pick. Likely, that means Alabama’s Mac Jones or North Dakota State’s Trey Lance.
Zoom out: The Patriots are benefiting from sound financial planning and the tightened salary cap forcing other teams to cut quality players. While these moves don’t make the Pats favorites to win the AFC East (hello, Buffalo), they’re certainly closing the gap.
