Happy Friday. Hoping your week looked a bit like Shawn “Jay-Z” Carter’s.
  • Sold 50% of Ace of Spades, his champagne brand, to LVMH for $300M
  • Sold a majority stake in TIDAL to Square for $297M and joined Square’s Board
  • Invested early in Oatly, which filed to IPO later this year
How is this sports related? Jay-Z is highly intentional and, in my opinion, likely stacking cash for a big investment. Since the 2019 partnership between Roc Nation and the NFL, there’s been talk of Jay-Z taking a significant stake in an NFL team. Maybe the time is now.

SPORTS BETTING
Money Moves
DraftKings, Penn National (which should rename itself Barstool), and FanDuel are in a mad dash to capture the hearts and wallets of sports bettors everywhere. This week, DraftKings made two major moves.
  1. Entered into a strategic partnership with Dish Satellite TV
You’ll be able to see odds and initiate bets directly on your Dish TV. Talk about dangerous for the wallet.
The head scratcher here is why DraftKings partnered with Dish instead of YouTube TV or a similar service with more audience overlap.
It either: wants to reach a new market or test the performance of the TV integration for future deals. Our bet is on the latter.
The knockout blow
DraftKings...
  1. Stepped into the octagon with the UFC in a massive five-year, $350M deal to become the official sportsbook of the mixed martial arts enterprise
This is huge. DraftKings will be able to offer in-game promotions, in-broadcast odds integrations, and use UFC branding across its daily fantasy and betting products. Not to mention, UFC is one of the fastest growing brands in sports.
Zoom out: Since 2018, when the Supreme Court lifted federal restrictions on the sports betting industry, business has boomed. In November 2020, in New Jersey alone, $931M was wagered on sports.
DraftKings knows the more it immerses fans into games (or fights), the more likely it is to stay atop its competitors.

AROUND THE LEAGUES
Hey Now, You’re an All-Star
The NBA All-Star game is this Sunday, March 7th. Let’s get prepared.
The schedule
  • 5:00: Coverage begins on TNT
  • 6:30: 3-Point Contest and Skills Challenge
  • 8:00: All-Star game tip off
  • Halftime: The Dunk Contest
The events
  • 3-point Contest: Headlined by Steph Curry and Devin Booker, every participant this year is an All-Star… sorry, Joe Harris.
  • Skills Challenge: Also loaded with talent, Luka Doncic and Chris Paul are the early favorites.
  • Dunk Contest: Fans (and the NBA’s marketing team) hoped Zion Williamson would headline the event. However, Obi Toppin, Cassius Stanley, and Anfernee Simons can throw down in their own right.
  • All-Star Game: Team LeBron and Team Durant (rosters) will play to a Final Target Score, calculated by taking the leading team’s score at the end of the 3rd quarter and adding 24. Why 24? To honor Kobe Bryant.
NCAAM
(20-1) #3 Baylor 81 vs. (17-7) #17 Oklahoma State 70
  • After watching freshman phenom Cade Cunningham limp off the court, the Cowboys are happy to lose only the game and not their star player.
(16-7) #15 Texas 69 vs. (14-9) #16 Oklahoma 65
  • Texas avenged an early season loss and looks more like the team that reached #4 in the rankings than the one that’s taken the court recently.
(19-8) #13 Kansas 67 vs. (12-11) UTEP 62
  • UTEP held Kansas to 20 points in the first half before losing the lead with under three minutes to go.
NHL
(12-5-3) Philadelphia Flyers 4 vs. (12-9-1) Pittsburgh Penguins 3
  • After the Penguins scored three goals in 71 seconds during the first period, the Flyers pulled off the comeback thanks to Claude Giroux (2 goals).
Premier League
(47 pts) Chelsea 1 vs. (43 pts) Liverpool 0
  • With this loss, Liverpool became the first defending Premier League champion to lose five consecutive home matches.
