Good morning.I blinked and we’re already halfway through the year. Here’s a short list of my favorite sports moments:

WATER COOLER TALK
🚴 Authorities in France arrested the fan who caused a massive pileup in the first leg of the Tour de France. She didn’t quite make it out of the country.
⚽️ Superstar Lionel Messi officially became a free agent today after 20 years at Barcelona. Though he’s expected to re-sign with Barca, he can technically negotiate with other clubs, too. Wonder if he’ll get close to his former 4-year, $674M deal...
⚽️ Jadon Sancho, the star English winger, completed a move to Manchester United from Borussia Dortmund.
🎾 Only partially through the second round at Wimbledon, five of the Women’s top 10 seeds have been eliminated. The top three seeds (Ash Barty, Aryns Sabalenka, and Elina Svitolina) are still battling on.
🏀 Giannis Antetokounmpo’s knee showed no structural damage (meaning his ACL is fine). He’s doubtful for game 5.
Interesting Times Ahead
Breaking with its usual stance, the NCAA passed policy changes allowing college athletes across the country to profit from their name, image, and likeness (NIL). Starting today.
The Cavinder sisters, who play basketball at Fresno State and have 500k Instagram followers between them and even more on TikTok, are going to New York for two rumored huge sponsor deals.
Yoke Gaming, started by a former Notre Dame football player, is bringing on thousands of college athletes.
There will be many, many more announced in the coming days. Don’t be surprised if deals reach the hundreds of thousands, if not millions.
Zoom out: This is the biggest change to college athletics since Title IX was implemented in 1972. While the NCAA explicitly said it is not allowing “pay-for-play,” the new NIL policy affects everything from recruiting to budget distribution throughout athletic departments.
Given the rather loose legal restrictions, there will certainly be bumps in the road. But allowing athletes the opportunity to profit off their own platforms certainly seems like the right move.
