Good morning. Fun Olympic fact: It was only a little over a century ago that pistol dueling was a sport in the Summer Olympics. I think we’re all glad they moved on.
In today's Sprint:
⚽️ Harry Kane sits out.
🏃 400m world record is shattered.
🏀 NBA free agency gets underway.
Trivia:Which player has signed the largest all-time NBA contract?
* Answer at the bottom
WATER COOLER TALK
🏈 Quinn Ewers, the #1 quarterback recruit in 2022, re-classed to 2021. He’ll enroll at Ohio State immediately. The new #1 QB for 2022? Clemson commit Cade Klubnik.
🏈 Carson Wentz is out 5-12 weeks to recover from foot surgery. He’ll likely miss a few weeks of the regular season and, because of the huge timeframe the Colts gave, could miss up to two months and grow even more tired of Nick Foles jokes.
⚽️ Harry Kane didn’t show at Tottenham’s training session yesterday. He’s trying to force an exit from his childhood club, likely to Manchester City. Kane has grown increasingly frustrated with Tottenham’s lack of trophies the last few years.
⚽️ The English Premier League is revamping its use of Video-Assisted Replay (VAR) to reduce the number of soft penalties called. NBA, please take note.
🏃♀️ Belarusian sprinter Krystsina Tsimanouskaya received a humanitarian visa from Poland after Belarus officials attempted to force her to return to the country. Her crime? Criticizing the Belarus track coaches who put her in an event without her consent that she had never competed in before.
Belarus made the news a few months ago for kidnapping a dissident reporter off of a commercial airplane.
*As of 11pm ET 8/3
The US women’s soccer team will miss their second straight Olympic final after losing in the semis to Canada. It’s just the 4th time in 62 meetings Canada has topped the US.
🤸🏻♀️ Jade Carey came back from a tough night on vault to win gold on the women’s floor event. Her winning routine scored a 14.366, a full 0.166 better than silver.
🤸🏻♀️ Simone Biles decided to compete in the beam final. Since it takes (took?) place this morning at 4:50 AM ET, consider this a placeholder for her medal spot.
⚾️ Japan rallied against team USA, scoring five runs off of relievers, for the comeback win 7-6 in extra innings. The loss pushes team USA one defeat away from elimination and sends Japan to the semifinals.
🏀 Slovenia and Luka Doncic beat Germany 94-70 to advance to the semis. With Luka playing, Slovenia is 17-0 all-time.
🏃 Event of the day: Norway's Karsten Warholm ran an absurd 45.94s on the 400m hurdles to win gold. He shattered the previous world record (which he held) by 0.6s.
Rai Benjamin of the US came so close to gold he also broke the previous world record.
Giphy - Jimmy Butler
NBA salaries have skyrocketed. To put the numbers below in perspective, when LeBron signed with the Miami Heat in 2010 he agreed to a six-year, $110 million contract ($18.3m average).
It's not just used car and lumber prices goingup. The first day of NBA free agency produced massive deals:
Jimmy Butler and the Heat: 4-year, $184m
Chris Paul and the Suns: 4-year, $120m
Steph Curry and the Warriors: 4-year, $215m
Trae Young and the Hawks: 5-year, $170m
Chris will be 40, Steph will be 37, and Jimmy will be 35 when their contracts end.
Difference makers on the move:
Alex Caruso leaves LA for Chicago: 4-year, $37m
Kyle Lowry heads south to Miami: 3-year, $90m
Lonzo Ball sign and trade to the Bulls: 4-year, $85m
While it may not be the NBA’s best backcourt, a Zach LaVine, Lonzo Ball, Alex Caruso trio may be the most entertaining.
Biggest names still on the market:
Kawhi Leonard (Clippers) - likely to stay with the Clippers.
John Collins (Hawks) - reports say Collins and the Hawks are "not close" on a salary at the moment.
DeMar DeRozan (Spurs) - different rumors put DeRozan anywhere from Miami to LA to Chicago. Even Woj doesn't know this one.
Zoom out: Despite all the movement, the 2022 championship odds are like Ben Simmons - hard to move. Kawhi Leonard is the only free agent left who, depending on where he signs, will significantly change them.
Brooklyn Nets: +220
LA Lakers: +440
Milwaukee Bucks: +850
Golden State Warriors: +1300
