WATER COOLER TALK
🏒 Blue Jackets goalie, Matiss Kivlenieks, who died during a fireworks accident earlier this month, passed while protecting his teammate, his teammate’s pregnant wife, and many other guests. Elvis Merzlikins, the teammate, praised Matiss at the service. His eulogy was incredibly moving.
"He saved my son, he saved my wife, and he saved me... He died a hero."
⛳️ Louis Oosthuizen (-6) leads the British Open, but Bryson DeChambeau was the news of the day. After his round (where he hit only four fairways) Bryson said, “With the driver right now, the driver sucks.” Cobra, his sponsor and maker of his clubs, was not happy. Bryson later issued an apology.
🏈 Tom Brady revealed he played the entire NFL season with a torn MCL. GOAT? Yeah, probably.
⚾️ The rivalry game between the New York Yankees and Boston Red Sox has to wait one more day after at least three positive tests in the Yankees organization.
🥊 Conor McGregor said he had multiple stress fractures in his left leg prior to the match with Dustin Poirier, explaining away the broken ankle. “Now, I have a titanium rod from my knee to the ankle. And the doctor says it’s unbreakable.”
Tag, You're It
July 15th was the last day for NFL players given the franchise tag to sign a long-term deal with their teams. The tag ties the player to their current team for one year, but many players want longer contracts for job security.
With 10 players tagged in March, only four reached a long-term deal:
Dak Prescott, Cowboys (4-years, $160M)
Leonard Williams, NY Giants (3-years, $63M)
Justin Simmons, Broncos (4-years, $61M)
Taylor Moton, Panthers (4-years, $72M)
The other six (or, more likely, their teams) have some commitment issues. But, the players won’t have money troubles. The franchise tag salary is equal to the average of the top five salaries at the position or 120% of the player’s salary the previous year, whichever is greater.
Chris Godwin, receiver Tampa Bay ($16M)
Allen Robinson, receiver Chicago ($18M)
And, the best part, the salary is fully guaranteed.
Bottom line: While the franchise tag seems like a power play by the franchise, it can benefit players, too. Take Kirk Cousins: Kirk made $44M over two years on the tag with Washington before signing the biggest guaranteed contract in history with the Vikings.
Soccer - Gold Cup
USA6vs. Martinique 1
Without its main stars (Christian Pulisic, Weston McKinnie, Gio Reyna), the US still dominated. Daryl Dike scored two goals to lead the way.
With 6 points, the US is in good position to advance past the group round.
You can think of the Gold Cup like the Euros, but for North and Central American countries. The US has won it six times while Mexico has won eight.
Stat:Through four games of the NBA Finals, the Suns and Bucks total points are 692-693. What was that about a boring series?
Quote:“My real name is Kelce.” (Pronounced ‘Kels’)
- Travis Kelce on how everyone, including his All-Pro QB, mispronounces his last name.
