Good morning. After crashing Wall Street, Redditors are now looking to buy an island, proclaim it as an independent nation, and call it “Memeland.”
I would not bet against them. Let’s sport.
In today's Sprint:
🏈 College football’s opening weekend.
🏅 A look into the 2022 Olympic Games.
🏒 Playoffs get chippy.

WATER COOLER TALK
🏀 An ex-Louisville assistant coach was charged with extortion after he threatened to report NCAA violations if the university did not pay him an additional 17 months salary.
🏀 NYC Mayor Bill de Blasio thought it was a good idea to do a press conference in this Brooklyn Nets getup.
🏈 Game times were set for college football’s opening weekend, including Clemson vs. Georgia and Miami vs. Alabama.
🎓 Stanford reversed its decision to eliminate 11 varsity sports. The men’s wrestling team was key to the decision. The team won a national title, raised funds to support itself for decades, and proposed a plan to meet Title IX requirements.
For the first time in three decades, the Summer and Winter Olympics are set to take place within six months of each other. But the U.S. may be sitting out the 2022 Beijing Games.
The situation: A recent U.S. State Department report stated explicitly that "genocide and crimes against humanity" have taken place in the past year against Muslim Uyghurs and other minorities in China’s western region of Xinjiang.
A few days ago, a coalition representing Uyghurs, Hong Kong, and other minority groups in China called for a full 2022 Olympic boycott.
No country has officially announced a boycott, nor is it clear any will, but the calls are coming from more and more influential people.
The crazy part - it’s bipartisan. Yesterday, both Nikki Haley (R-SC) and Nancy Pelosi (D-CA) called for the US to boycott the Games.
“We said we would never again turn our eyes away from genocide. What is happening there now is the reason why I think we should boycott the Olympics.” - Haley
“If we don’t speak out against human rights violations in China for commercial reasons, we lose all moral authority to speak out for human rights anywhere.” - Pelosi’s ambassador to the United Nations added on, calling the situation “one of the worst human rights crises of our time.”
Britain’s ambassador to the United Nations added on, calling the situation “one of the worst human rights crises of our time.”
But what are the athletes saying? American skier Mikaela Shiffrin summed up athlete sentiment well:
“You certainly don't want to be put in the position of having to choose between human rights versus being able to do your job.”
The bottom line: A full-on boycott is unlikely. However, a diplomatic boycott where world leaders and royals don’t attend the Games is very much on the table.
Amidst the public outcry, the International Olympic Committee has repeatedly said it must remain neutral and stay out of politics. The IOC is based in Switzerland.
