Good morning. Whether you're a new Sprinter or you've been around a couple of months, we appreciate you spending a few minutes with us. Got a good one for you today.
In today's Sprint:
🏇Trouble at Churchill
🏀 Coach K’s final season
⚾️ deGrom cannot be stopped
Trivia:Which school won the very first ACC men’s basketball tournament in 1954?
WATER COOLER TALK
🏀 Watching Kyrie stomp on Lucky the Leprechaun seems to have unraveled the Celtics. Danny Ainge stepped down as Celtics President while Brad Stevens is transitioning from head coach to Head of Basketball Operations. He’ll begin looking for his own replacement immediately.
🥍 Heading into its third year, the Premier Lacrosse League raised another round of funding led by New England Patriots owner Robert Kraft.
Mike Krzyzewski will retire after the upcoming season, ending his run at the helm of the Duke Blue Devils, the program he made into the most hated or beloved team in college basketball.
In 1980, Duke hired a relatively unknown 33-year-old from Army. Over the next 41 years, he led the program to:
5 national titles
15 ACC championships
12 Final Fours
As a coach, Krzyzewski may be the best ever:
1,170 wins (1st all-time)
3x Naismith Coach of the Year
3x Olympic Gold Medalist head coach
His greatest coaching accomplishment? Turning Duke, a perennial NIT contender, into a veritable powerhouse and one of college basketball's true Blue Bloods.
Looking ahead:Coach K is giving himself one more shot at a sixth title. With the 4th ranked recruiting class and a strong returning squad, he's got the talent to make it happen.
Instead of an outside hire, Duke kept it internal. Jon Scheyer, a Duke assistant coach and the point guard on the 2010 natty winning team, will be the team’s head coach starting next spring.
No pressure, Jon.
Zoom out: With both Coach K and Roy Williams retiring, it’s the end of an era for college basketball’s best rivalry.
AROUND THE LEAGUES
#5 Dallas Mavericks 105 vs. #4 LA Clippers 100
Right about now the Clippers must wish they hadn't tanked to avoid the Lakers.
Luka Doncic (42 pts, 8 reb, 14 ast) got whatever he wanted no matter who was guarding him.
Mavs lead 3-2.
#5 Atlanta Hawks103vs. #4 New York Knicks 89
Midway through the season the Hawks fired their coach and sat at the bottom of the standings. Now, they'll move on to face the 76ers in the second round.
Trae Young (36 pts, 9 ast) took a bow after sealing the game at Madison Square Garden.
Montreal Canadiens 5vs. Winnipeg Jets 3
Jets' Mark Scheifele will likely face a suspension after knocking Habs forward Jake Evans unconscious at the end of the game. If Schleifele finds his way back to the ice, expect the Canadiens to go right at him.
Canadiens lead 1-0.
Colorado Avalance3 vs. Vegas Golden Knights 2 - OT
Though they didn't win, the Golden Knights kept this one respectable, proving they can play with the Avs.
Avs goalie Phillipp Grubbauer made 39 saves while a Mikko Rantanen wrist shot won the game in OT.
Avs lead 2-0.
(33-23) LA Dodgers14vs. (31-25) St. Louis Cardinals 3
Wild stat: Cody Bellinger went 2-for-2 with 6 RBI… in the first inning.
(23-29) Washington Nationals 5vs. (25-28) Atlanta Braves 3
Over his last 162 games, Nats’ Juan Soto has 125 R, 38 HR, and 115 RBI, joining a shortlist of players such as Babe Ruth and Barry Bonds.
Stat:Jacob deGrom’s 0.71 ERA is the lowest for a qualified pitcher through May since 1964. When your changeup is 92 mph, hitters don't stand much of a chance.
Quote:“In Miami, he ran into a wall and busted his eye. He tried to lie to us and say he got into a fight leaving the club.”
- Golden State Warriors’ Draymond Green on his favorite Klay Thompson moment.
Highlight:This Mbappe to Griezmann connection and goal reminded everyone why France is the reigning World Cup champ.
