Happy Friday. After All-Stars like KD and Damian Lillard agreed to represent USA basketball at the Olympics, they became the early (and very heavy) favorites at -305.
Let’s just hope we don’t have to play Lithuania for the Bronze Medal.
P.S. Happy birthday, Wehman! We appreciate you.
In today's Sprint:
⛳️ Lefty’s lucky day.
🏒 The Canadiens are back.
⚾️ A Wild walk-off.
Trivia:Which of these NHL teams has the longest active NHL Stanley Cup drought?
Toronto Maple Leafs
WATER COOLER TALK
⛳️ Phil “Lefty” Mickelson drained 103 feet worth of putts on consecutive holes, but Satoshi Kodaira (-7) and Kramer Hickok (-7) hold the lead at the Travelers Championship.
🏈 Chicago Bears receiver Marquise Goodwin will participate in the 2021 Olympic Long Jump trials. In 2012, he finished 10th in the event at the London Games.
🏈 The NFL decided to allow throwback and alternate helmets as part of jerseys this year. Recently, each team has been stuck with just one helmet option. The move opens up all kinds of cool jersey combinations.
🏀 The Indiana Pacers hired head coach Rick Carlisle just a few days after he resigned as the Mavs head coach. Speaking of the Mavs, Jason Kidd is rumored to have a deal in place to be their next coach.
We’re Habing a Good Time
The Montreal Canadiens (called the Habs by fans) were an afterthought heading into the NHL Playoffs. In fact, of all playoff teams, they had the worst record and +7000 odds to win the Stanley Cup.
Yesterday, they punched their ticket to the Stanley Cup Final.
#4 Montreal Canadiens 3vs. #1 Vegas Golden Knights 2 - OT
The journey: Facing two of the League’s four #1 seeds, the Habs are giving off serious UMBC vibes (sorry, Virginia fans). This playoff, they have:
Overcome a 3-1 deficit to beat the juggernaut #1 Toronto Maple Leafs.
Swept the #3 Winnipeg Jets to become the sole victor in the North Division.
Beat the top-seeded Knights, who have made it to three of the last four semifinals.
The fans up north are used to winning. The Habs own the most ever Stanley Cup victories (24) and appearances (35). But it’s been 28 years since their last appearance.
The last time the Canadiens were in the Stanley Cup Finals, the original Jurassic Park came out the next week.
The bottom line: While Montreal hasn’t been the pick to win any of their series so far, that may change after their third dominant upset.
#4 LA Clippers106vs. #2 Phoenix Suns 92
Without Kawhi Leonard, Reggie Jackson (23 pts) has become the Clippers' second scoring option behind Paul George. He’s averaging over 20 points per game since Kawhi went out.
In hindsight, the Clippers losing the first two games meant they had the Suns right where they wanted them. This may be the start of their third straight series win after being down 0-2.
Suns lead the series 2-1.
College Baseball World Series
#2 Texas 6 vs. Virginia 2
Texas' Zach Zubia hit a double with the bases loaded and 2 outs in the top of the 9th inning on a 2-3 count. Meanwhile, Virginia didn't have a hit with runners in scoring position.
UVA is eliminated. Texas will play Mississippi State.
(42-33) Chicago Cubs 4 vs. (44-31) LA Dodgers 0
The Cubs threw a combined no-hitter, but, between four pitchers, managed to walk eight batters and hit another two.
That's the 7th no-hitter this year. One more, and the MLB will have a new record.
(45-31) Tampa Bay Rays1vs. (44-31) Boston Red Sox 0
In an odd twist, this game ended with no runs batted in after the Rays’ walk-off wild pitch in the bottom of the ninth.
